State of emergency declared for Los Angeles County as Creek, Rye fires continue to burn

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles County Tuesday evening as a result of the Creek and Rye fires.

By the time Brown had issued his declaration at about 6 p.m., the Creek fire in northwest Los Angeles had burned 11,000 acres with zero containment the Rye fire in Santa Clarita had engulfed 5,000 acres and was 5 percent contained.

The emergency declaration allows for state firefighting assistance to local governments and suspends rules that might hinder recovery efforts after the fires are put out.

Brown declared a state of emergency in Ventura County earlier Tuesday as the Thomas fire raged out of control.
