The Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisors Hilda L. Solis and Kathryn Barger to extend the county’s Winter Shelter Program by an additional month -- through March 31, 2018 for locations where it is possible to do so.

Supervisor Barger said, “In parts of our County, extreme weather conditions persist through early spring. It is imperative that we do everything we can to make sure that unsheltered individuals are not exposed to these dangerous elements while the weather still poses a threat.”

“Our commitment in this fight for those who are experiencing homelessness is unwavering. Winter is an especially difficult season for this vulnerable population,” said Supervisor Solis. “With days getting shorter and the temperatures at night dropping further, it is a critical time to provide those experiencing homelessness a safe place to come in from the cold to receive services, eat a warm meal, and sleep.”

$709,000 from the Homeless and Housing Program will be used to fund the extension. Last year, County-funded Winter Shelter Program sites served 3,451 individuals.
